It is a sad commentary when you can label yourself a racist and feel good about it. This idiot, Justin Hanson, 20, of Mason City, Iowa, was charged with third-degree harassment Wednesday by Police Department. Hanson, gladly admitted that he put a cardboard sign reading, “F*** you, niggers” in the yard of black resident Margaret Foster during the night of May 10. The Globe Gazette said that he was charged with third-degree harassment is a simple misdemeanor, punishable by up to 30 days in jail. He was taken to the Cerro Gordo County Jail and is being held on $300 bond. Oh geez, you think this will deter him from engaging in such behavior again?
The Globe Gazette also said that second Ward Councilman Steve Tynan, has arranged a listening post on race relations because of the incident. Tynan said he was approached by former Second Ward Councilman Leonard Foster about holding the listening post. Margaret Foster is Foster’s daughter. Leonard Foster said Wednesday that both he and his daughter have received many messages of support from the community since the incident occurred.“We’ve had phone calls and e-mails and I’ve had people stop me on the street to talk to me about it,” he said.“I’m 70 years old. I’ve been through it. I don’t want my grandchildren to go through it. But I also know this does not represent the views of the entire white community.”Foster said he hopes the listening post will be a way of bringing people together — “not only the neighborhood but the community, so this thing doesn’t get out of hand.”
To add insult to injury, the police department said that this did not amount to a hate crime and has not been charged as such. According to the Globe, the police said that in their opinion the actions of Justin Hanson did not meet all the requirements needed to be considered a hate crime in Iowa. To be charged with a hate crime, the crime must be one of the following four public offenses:
• Assault in violation of individual rights under section 708.2C;
• Violations of individual rights under section 712.9 (arson);
• Criminal mischief in violation of individual rights under section 716.6A
• Trespass in violation of individual rights under section 716.8, subsections 3 and 4.
Am I missing something here, but didn’t his actions add up to at least the violation of individual rights or even criminal mischief or trespass in violation of individual rights? You know this is sad that so many times blacks have to look over their shoulders to see if they have neighbors who are racists and will stop at nothing to harass them. This man is only 20 years old and to think he has this mindset is simply horrendous.
Whether the harassment was directed at a homosexual, a Jew, a Muslim or any other ethnicity, a $300 bond is certainly not a good deterrent for such behavior. What he received amounts to a slap on the wrist and I am pretty sure we have not heard the last of this loser. Unfortunately he will graduate to a higher level and intensify his hatred of blacks.
