Gun violence mars Memorial Day weekend in Chicago. It breaks my heart when a kid gets killed through gun violence. According to the the Chicago Tribune, Shakelia Taylor, 15, of the 7100 block of South Woodlawn Avenue, was shot in the back and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later, according to the medical examiner’s office. The second victim, also in her teens, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was listed in good condition at Stroger Hospital. According to media reports, police believe the shots may have been fired from a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The motive was under investigation and no one was in custody early Tuesday.
Recently Rev. Jesse Jackson proposed more programs and education for these gangbangers instead of arming the cops with high-powered rifles. It is a sad commentary when the criminals in the streets have better weapons than the police force. I can’t recall seeing Jackson at one march in Chicago about the gun violence. I guess there is no companies to shake down for money for his Rainbow Push Coalition. It will take the concerted efforts of residents, law enforcement and elected officials to take the streets back from these armed thugs. This young girl didn’t have to die. She didn’t live to reach her fullest potentials, but instead was a statistic. Sad, really sad.
